One of the joys of being a nurse entrepreneur is being able to set one’s own schedule. This doesn’t mean that you will be working fewer hours. However, you do enjoy the luxury of having the freedom to decide when it is best for you to work and when you should be taking time off. This luxury also allows you to put your family first and your job second. Wouldn’t you like to enjoy being able to control your work hours, work schedule, and to set your priorities based on your values.
It is also important to develop a nurse business or a part of your business that involves offering information products. Why would I think this is so important? Because it takes your freedom a step further. It allows to work from where ever you are as long as you have access to the internet or whatever resources you are using to sell information products. This is in addition to information products producing an income even when you aren’t working. You can receive income from information products when you are sleeping, on vacation, or at other times when you are not actively working.
Start now to think about how you can sell information product(s) as a part or all of your nurse entrepreneur business!

Over Thanksgiving I added another page to www.familycaregiverassistance.com. I also created a draft of the “give away” item when family caregivers join the site.
We received the intial draft of the web web design. We recommended a number a changes including moving the tag line, minor changes to the logo, cropping the pictures for the site differently than wa sproposed, some color changes, and larger lettering.
Creating a web site reminds me of building a house. There are many decisions that need to be made in a short amount of time. It is hard to anticipate the decisions until one sees a draft of the site and then there are features that just do not seem to go togetehr well.
I will keep you posted as I move through this process,

Today I recieved word from Membergate that they will have an initial draft of the website done by Nov. 24. There is a lot involved in starting a new webiste. In some way it feels as though it would be similiar to building a new house. Decisions to be made about many little details including: colors, font, look and feel of the website, number of columns, catagory headings, look of the coatagory headings, and much much more.
Today I also interviewed a friend who had been a family caregiver for an uncle and for her mother. We discussed some of the most important issues that arose for her. We also discussed what she wished she had known earlier and what information would have been the most helpful for her.
I could related to much of what she talked about as I had been a long distance cargiver for my mother before she passed away over 10 years ago at age 63. There were issues my firend and I had in common and issues that were quite different because her family members for who she was caring were in the general area while my mother was hundreds of miles away.
I also stopped at a book store and purchased a couple of books on caregiver to refresh my memory on the important information for caregivers. This will help to stimulate ideas for articles to post on the site.

A well known college in St. Paul, MN is offering a doctor of nursing practice. The college of St. Catherine’s is offering this degree www.stkate.edu/dnp for experienced nurses who want to further their education and improve their practice even more than they have in the past. This new degree is creating quite a stir in the medical field as many physicians do not want nurses to be able to obtain a doctorial degree because they think it will be too confusing for patients. Up to this point the only doctorial degree that has been available to nurses has been in research. What are your thoughts? Do you think this will be too confusing for patients? Do you think this degree would give a nurse entrepreneur more credibility?

Understanding medical abbreviations can be challenging especially when they are not in our specific practice area. I came across an article written by Janabeth Fleming Taylor, RN, RNC that helps with understanding medical abbreviations. There is a high failure rate for new businesses during the first year in business. Why is this? One reason is because the owners expect instant success. Starting a new business is more like a marathon than a sprint. You have to hang in there for the long haul. You can not do this by focusing on your failures. You have to look at your successes, the things that went right, your strengths. Besides, it is a lot more fun to look at your successes rather than your failures. Have fun while you build your business. For more ideas on looking at your strengths read Marcus Buckinghams book, “Now Discover Your Strengths.”
